Montana, in numbers

Net metering in Montana is 1:1.

NorthWestern Energy credits each kWh you send to the grid at the retail rate. Credit left on your yearly settle-up date goes unpaid, so we size the system to cover your use as panels age, not much more.

  • 14.99¢

When the grid goes down

Keep the essentials running when the grid goes down.

Every package includes a battery. Pick what you’d keep on and see about how long each package carries it. One battery doesn’t back up the whole house — you choose what stays on.

About 18 hours on Basic, 49 on Optimal, 98 on Premium, for a 235 W load.

Estimate, not a promise. Real runtime depends on your appliances, the weather and your settings. Battery sizes from the Enphase and Tesla datasheets; freezer from ENERGY STAR; ceiling fans from Mass.gov; other loads are typical estimates. We assume 85% of stored energy reaches your outlets. Solar recharging during the day isn’t counted. Without power, a refrigerator keeps food cold for about four hours (Ready.gov).

Where these numbers come from
  • Refrigerator, 60 W: about 490 kWh a year for a full-size ENERGY STAR model (estimate)
  • Chest freezer, 25 W: about 215 kWh a year (ENERGY STAR)
  • Lights, 10 LED bulbs, 100 W: 8–12 W per bulb (estimate)
  • Wi-Fi router and modem, 25 W: 15–35 W together (estimate)
  • Phones and a laptop charging, 50 W: typical charger ratings (estimate)
  • CPAP or medical device, 55 W: about 35–105 W depending on settings (estimate)
  • TV, 50–55 inch, 90 W: about 77–104 W (estimate)
  • Two ceiling fans, 100 W: 10–100 W each (Mass.gov)
  • Gas furnace fan, 450 W: 60–900 W depending on the motor (estimate)
  • Central AC, 3-ton, running nonstop, 3,500 W: 3,500–5,000 W while running (estimate)

Three packages, turnkey

Questions

Straight answers.

What people ask us most, with the rule or the number behind each answer.

What happened to the federal solar tax credit?

The federal 25D tax credit ended for systems installed after December 31, 2025. Our numbers don’t include it.

We don’t give tax advice — please talk to your tax professional.

Can I change my mind after I sign?

Take the proposal home. You don’t have to sign anything today.

If you sign at your home, the federal FTC Cooling-Off Rule gives you until midnight of the third business day after the sale to cancel, with no penalty.

Your right to cancel, state by state

What happens to the extra power my panels make?

By Montana law, NorthWestern Energy credits each kWh you send to the grid at the retail rate, carried to your next bill. Once a year, on the settle-up date you choose (January 1, April 1, July 1 or October 1), credit left over goes to the utility unpaid — so we size the system to cover your use as panels age, not much more. Electric co-ops set their own terms.

Buyback rules are set by your utility and state regulators. We don’t control them, and no one can guarantee them for years ahead.

Are there Montana incentives or tax breaks?

Our research found no state cash incentive or tax credit for home solar we can count on.

The first $20,000 of value solar adds to your home is exempt from property tax for 10 years (MCA 15-6-224). Montana has no sales tax. The state’s solar tax credit was repealed in 2021.

We don’t give tax advice — please talk to your tax professional.

What does the battery do for me?

With 1:1 net metering, power you send to the grid offsets power you buy later, so a battery mostly adds backup — it keeps essentials running when the grid goes down. Any savings from a battery we calculate with your real bills.

Every package includes a battery: Basic — an Enphase IQ Battery 5P (5 kWh), Optimal — one Tesla Powerwall 3 (13.5 kWh), Premium — two (27 kWh). One battery doesn’t back up the whole house; you choose what stays on.

What licenses apply in Montana?

Montana electrical contractor license and Construction Contractor License.

Are you a government program or my utility?

We're a private company from New York. We supply and install solar and battery systems, with our own crews in all 19 states we serve. Not a government program, not your utility.

We don’t offer free panels.

Who covers the equipment?

Manufacturer warranties apply under each maker’s terms. Some — Tesla, FranklinWH, REC ProTrust — require a certified installer and product registration; ask us about it before you sign, and check the final warranty documents.

Our installation and roof warranty is ours — 25 years, in writing.

What if your company goes out of business?

Your panels, inverter and battery stay covered by their manufacturers’ warranties, under each maker’s terms (some require a certified installer and product registration). Our installation and roof warranty is ours — 25 years, in writing. Keep all your documents.

Will solar panels damage my roof?

Our own crews install every system. Every roof penetration is sealed and covered by our written roof warranty for 25 years. We check your roof’s age before we install.

Will I really pay $0 for electricity?

We design every system for $0 for electricity: your panels are sized to cover what you pay for electricity every year for 25 years, at today’s prices. Where your utility limits how big a system can be, your estimate shows what’s possible.

It’s a design goal, not a guarantee: your use, the weather and your utility’s rules can change. Fixed utility charges still apply.

Who will call me, and when?

Our own team, from (333) 555-4090, during Montana calling hours: 8 AM–9 PM, your local time. We call by hand and don’t text. Tell us any time to stop, and we stop.

How long until my system is on?

Usually up to a month from contract to switch-on. Permits and your utility’s approval set the exact date.
